PERSONAL PROFILE by Michael P Lennon
Life, Death… and the Gap Between
Where recovery actually happens
Let’s not dress this up.
Mental health recovery isn’t neat.
It’s not a fresh start montage with nice music in the background.
It’s more like waking up after a storm and realising your whole house needs rebuilt — and you’ve only got one hammer and half the instructions.
That’s the truth.
And if you’ve been there, you already know it.
The Bit No One Talks About
Everyone talks about the breakdown.
Fewer people talk about hospital.
But almost no one talks about what comes after.
That space… I call it the gap.
You’re not in crisis anymore.
But you’re not stable either.
You’re expected to just “get back to normal” —
when you don’t even know what normal is anymore.
That’s where the real work starts.
The Wreckage You Come Home To
When I got out, life hadn’t paused.
It had piled up.
Letters. Bills. Missed calls. Awkward conversations waiting to happen.
It’s like being handed your own life back… but it’s in pieces.
And no one gives you a manual.
That’s the gap.
Not dramatic. Not visible.
But very real.
The Honest Truth (That Actually Helps)
Here’s what made the difference for me — not theory, not slogans, just real things that worked:
1. Tell the Truth (Properly)
Not “I’m tired.”
Not “just stressed.”
The real truth.
“I’m not okay.”
That’s where things start to shift.
2. Less Scrolling, More Breathing
Social media nearly finished me.
Everyone looked sorted. I wasn’t.
Deleting it didn’t fix everything —
but it quietened the noise enough to think again.
3. Find Your People
You don’t need loads.
You need a few solid ones.
The kind who sit with you, say nothing, and don’t make it weird.
4. Draw a Line (Even If It’s Shaky)
The past will replay itself forever if you let it.
At some point, you decide:
“That happened. But it’s not driving anymore.”
5. Stop Worrying What People Think
Most people are too busy dealing with their own mess.
And the ones talking?
Let them.
You’ve bigger things to do — like getting your life back.
6. Get Help (Early If You Can)
There’s no prize for struggling alone.
Professionals don’t “fix” you.
They give you tools.
That’s enough to start.
7. Do Something — Anything
Walk. Cook. Write.
Half of it will be rubbish.
Doesn’t matter.
It keeps you connected to the world.
8. Deal With the Root
Not just symptoms.
The actual cause.
Because guessing doesn’t fix anything.
Understanding does.
9. Face the Red Letters
This one’s brutal.
But real.
Ignoring problems makes them louder.
Open the letter. Make the call.
Most systems are more flexible than fear tells you they are.
What the Gap Really Is
The gap is where:
- survival meets responsibility
- silence meets reality
- and honesty becomes unavoidable
You can’t fake stability there.
You either build it…
or you don’t.
Why Mindspire Exists
This is exactly why Mindspire was built.
Not for quotes.
Not for trends.
But for this part — the bit in the middle.
The part services don’t fully cover.
The part people don’t explain.
The part that nearly takes people back under.
The Quiet Truth
Recovery isn’t about becoming a different person.
It’s about learning how to carry what happened
without it crushing you.
Some days you’ll feel solid.
Other days you won’t.
Both count.
You’re not broken.
You’re rebuilding.
And rebuilding is slower than breaking —
but it’s a lot more permanent.
